QSFP28 100G 100KM Optical Modules technical overview
Release date:Jun 16,2025

QSFP28 Interface Standard

QSFP28 (Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable 28) is a compact optical transceiver interface that supports four high-speed channels within a single module. Each channel operates at up to 28Gbps, delivering an aggregate data rate of 100Gbps. Compared to traditional transceiver formats, QSFP28 offers advantages such as a smaller footprint, lower power consumption, and broad compatibility—making it ideal for use in high-density data center environments and next-generation telecom networks.

100G Data Transmission Capability

The QSFP28 100G module achieves 100Gbps transmission by leveraging four parallel channels, each operating at 25Gbps. This robust data throughput meets the increasing demands for high-speed data transmission across data centers, metropolitan area networks (MANs), and even some backbone network segments. The enhanced bandwidth significantly improves overall network efficiency and performance.

100KM Long-Reach Transmission

A standout feature of the QSFP28 100G module is its ability to transmit over distances up to 100 kilometers. By integrating advanced optical technologies—such as Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFA) and coherent optical transmission—the module ensures signal integrity over extended distances with minimal bit error rates. This capability is particularly valuable for long-haul links in MANs and wide area networks (WANs), where it helps reduce the need for intermediate relay stations, ultimately lowering both infrastructure and operational costs.

Modulation Technologies

QSFP28 100G 100KM modules typically employ either PAM4 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation with four levels) or coherent modulation techniques. PAM4 improves spectral efficiency by encoding two bits per symbol, allowing for higher data rates within limited bandwidth. On the other hand, coherent optical communication makes use of the phase and polarization of light to transmit data, offering greater resilience to noise and significantly higher capacity—making it suitable for ultra-long-distance, high-performance optical links.
